AI output verifier

The quiet rate-limiter on every agent deployment: a person who can tell when the machine is wrong, at volume, in their own domain.

Every agent deployment creates a standing obligation: someone must review outputs, handle exceptions, assure quality and document what happened McKinsey 2025. Today that obligation is spread invisibly across existing jobs — the editor checking the draft, the analyst checking the model’s numbers, the support lead checking the bot’s answers.

Microsoft’s study of 200,000 real AI conversations found the same thing from the other side: in the most AI-applicable occupations, the work that stays most human is exactly this — verification, judgement, communication Microsoft Research 2025. The possibility is that this distributed task concentrates into a profession: domain experts paid specifically to certify machine output at volume, the way quality assurance condensed out of manufacturing.

The threat is the interesting part. Verifier models — AI checking AI — are already being built, and they will take the volume. What they cannot take is responsibility: a signed human judgement about whether the system is fit to operate. So the durable version of this job is narrower than the name suggests — less “check the output”, more “own the decision to trust the checker”.

What holds it up
  • Reviewing outputs, handling exceptions and assuring quality is the work AI creates alongside the work it does
  • Even in the most AI-applicable occupations, the human share concentrates in checking, judging and communicating
What threatens it
  • Verifier models — AI checking AI — could take the volume and leave only the exceptions
  • The work may remain a task inside every job rather than becoming a job of its own
